Job Description


The starting salary for this role is \xc2\xa331,262 per annum for working 36 hours per week.

We are recruiting a Highway Maintenance Support Technician, a new role within the Highways Operations and Infrastructure group.

Your work base will be at the highway depot in Godstone, but your work responsibilities will cover the whole county so you may be required to attend meetings and carry out site visits across the county. We also offer agile working to enable an element of working from home, where appropriate.

About us

The Highways & Transport service, of which the Highways Operations and Infrastructure group forms a part, is responsible for ensuring the effective management, maintenance and improvement of all highway and transport assets.

The highway is the most valuable asset managed by Surrey County Council with a replacement value of approximately \xc2\xa37.5bn and is critical to the economic growth of the County. It is regarded by Members and residents as one of the most important services provided by the Council.

About the role

Reporting to the Principal Maintenance Engineer, the postholder will be supporting the team to deliver a wide and varied work programme. You will be responsible for ordering and auditing technical works, with particular focus on the countywide signs and road markings maintenance programmes. You will also be involved with assisting in the delivery of minor works identified and funded by elected members. You will need to keep accurate records and ensure that all key stakeholders are updated as required.

The role requires you to develop excellent relationships with colleagues, contractors, and other stakeholders, including elected members. You will be required to respond to customer enquiries, mainly through our on-line enquiry management system, ensuring customer response times are met.

About you

While highway experience is not required, we are looking for someone who will have the ability to understand technical issues, can manage a wide and varied workload and has strong IT skills. You will be supported in developing a sound understanding of the legislation relating to your work area and of how to commission a range of highway maintenance works using specialist software.

You will need to work closely with teams across the service to deal with issues effectively according to Surrey\'s policies and procedures.

Working with a range of contractors, you will help to ensure value for money and a quality service for our residents. You will be required to take a pro-active and flexible approach, managing conflicting priorities effectively.

You will be expected to uphold excellent customer care standards, have a positive and proactive approach, taking pride in your work.

Highways Operations & Infrastructure operates an agile working system, in accordance with the County Council policy. This means that all Officers are expected to be available when needed, with flexibility to work from both Council offices and their home (or other suitable arrangements). It is expected that all Officers will regularly work from their designated office to maintain team working and as required by their manager. All Officers are expected to make themselves available to attend site and other meetings when needed.
