The Durham Wildlife Trust is one of 46 Wildlife Trusts working for the benefit of wildlife across the UK. Nationwide, the Wildlife Trust, with 850,000 members, is the largest UK voluntary organisation dedicated to conservation of habitats and species.
The Durham Wildlife Trust has operated across County Durham, Darlington, Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland for over 50 years protecting and restoring nature and today the Trust manages 52 sites across 1300 hectares, delivering nature recovery at a local scale. Their projects deliver solutions to ecological and climate emergencies, whilst engaging and providing learning to thousands of people every year. The Trust is led by a Board of Trustees supported by a professional team and more than 250 regular volunteers.
The next few years are looking promising for the Trust as they work toward their Strategy 2030. This will be delivered by developing innovative new approaches to their existing work, and bringing on new sites and projects, which this role will be very heavily involved in.
About the Job
In the past five years the Trust has grown significantly, doubling the area of land it manages and the funding it has been able to secure to deliver natures recovery. The Trust\'s land holding is the foundation on which future success will be built on and this position has been created to spearhead the management of the organisations land assets and to play a pivotal role in delivering the Strategy 2030 ambitions.
This position will be central to the Trust\'s ambitions over the coming years to maximise the environmental, social and economic benefits that the landholding can provide. You\'ll be providing crucial support to the existing team in the management of the Trusts sites and assets which include some of the rarest habitats in the UK, including magnesian limestone SSSI\'s and coastal gill woodlands or Pennine hay meadows. In addition, the Trust is also leading efforts across their territory on the management of land for Biodiversity Net Gain and Nutrient Neutrality, and you\'ll be heavily involved in these areas, ensuring that obligations for these schemes are adhered to.
The role will also encompass line management of the supporting team, ensuring excellent results and the highest standard of project delivery are achieved. You\'ll also be involved in the support and development of the Trusts network of volunteers, who are pivotal to the day to day running of the organisation.
The Ideal Candidate
Ideally, you\'ll be a land management professional with relevant experience of habitat management, project management, and agri-environmental/Biodiversity Net Gain schemes. A good specific knowledge of wildlife and an understanding of how land management should be best implemented to the benefit of species and their habitats would be advantageous.
You\'ll be a strategic thinker, able to inspire and provide leadership. A high level of organisation is important, and you\'ll be working both within a team and under your own initiative. An entrepreneurial spirit would be advantageous, with an ability to identify new opportunities and seek out and implement new ideas, and strong fiscal and budgetary competence is important.
Although RICS accreditation isn\'t essential, it would be an advantage and for those without AssocRICS/MRICS, a relevant degree or equivalent is essential. Experience in the environmental or land management sector is most important; ideally two years plus.
Please note: any offer of employment made by the DWT will be subject to a Basic Level DBS check, to be repeated every three years.
