The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is a centre of excellence in research and postgraduate teaching in the field of tropical medicine. Our multidisciplinary approach to global health research allows us to translate research innovation and scientific breakthroughs from laboratory research into effective interventions for those most in need, working in partnership with researchers and academic organisations in Low- and Middle-Income Countries. The department for Tropical Disease Biology (TDB) is a leading international research and teaching department with a focus on translational research of tropical infectious and neglected diseases. Translational research is at the core of the department, with activities in \xe2\x80\x98product discovery and development\xe2\x80\x99, \xe2\x80\x98translation of knowledge into practice\xe2\x80\x99 and \xe2\x80\x98capacity strengthening\xe2\x80\x99 underpinning a truly bench to bedside research portfolio. A key strength of the department is that we use community/field observations to inform basic laboratory experiments and in the same way aim to use findings from basic research to influence clinical treatment and community prevention initiatives. The Department carries out world leading research across all of the major human infections to address unmet Global Health challenges, these include emerging and high consequence infectious diseases (e.g. Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever Virus, Zika Virus, SARS-CoV-2), multi-drug resistant bacteria (e.g. MDR M. tuberculosis and WHO-identified priority AMR pathogens), malaria, and neglected tropical diseases such as soil-transmitted helminths, schistosomes, filarial worms and snakebite. Within TDB there are also three LSTM research centres: the Centre for Drugs and Diagnostics, the Centre for Neglected Tropical Diseases and the Centre for Snakebite Research and Interventions. The Centres are key vehicles embedded within the Department, moving research into developable solutions in partnership with other LSTM Departments, including drugs, diagnostics and vaccines; enabling technologies; and activity and policy implementation. The Head of Department for the Department of Tropical Disease Biology is a senior leadership role at LSTM. Reporting to the Deputy Director, you will provide strategic and visionary leadership across the department and join the executive decision-making body of the institute. You will operationalise the strategy for the Department of Tropical Disease Biology, which aligns with the wider school strategy that seeks to improve health outcomes in disadvantaged populations globally, through partnership in research and education. You will have a robust understanding of global health, empowering you to drive growth, whilst promoting a culture of research excellence and innovation, and establishing strong partnerships to address public and global health challenges in low- and middle-income countries. The successful candidate will be a recognised leading authority in a discipline relevant to the Department of Tropical Disease Biology coupled with an international reputation for outstanding research including a track record consisting of significant publications, sustained research engagement, and a continued dedication to education and equitable partnerships. In addition, you will excel in fostering interdisciplinary research initiatives, cultivating a positive research culture, securing external funding, and building partnerships with industry, government, and international organisations.
