The University of Cambridge has a bold ambition to use digitalisation to transform education and research, and UIS' team of developers, designers, testers, analysts and support staff is leading this exciting work.The roleThe GBN Technician will join a team of 3 customer-focused GBN project managers, working to help 60,000 students and staff to study and work in a cutting-edge environment that enables world changing research and development.You'll get the chance to collaborate and interact with some of the finest minds in the world, sharing data, insight and expertise to make a meaningful difference to the University's success.What you will doAs a GBN Technician you will:

• Provide administration and on-site and general project support with initial background work for new projects forming a large part of the role
• Maintain the database of information that describes the details of the cable plant, its allocation and use.
• Be responsible for ensuring network upgrades are implemented where required Carrying out network condition surveys, drafting reports and implementing remedial works.
• Ensure that the network maps are maintained and always up to date. Respond to network enquiries from other utilities.
• Ensure communication is always maintained between all internal teams and external customers.
• Raise POs as needed to issue to contractors and ensure that budget costs are tracked, issue invoice request on work completion.
• Take an active role in the wider team, provide cover during periods of absence, contribute to the design of processes.

This position is a permanent, full-time role, usually based on the University's West Cambridge Site.What you will need

• Experience of Microsoft office software.
• Some understanding or experience of civils/cabling or general IT/telecommunications infrastructure would be an advantage
• Familiarity with personal computer systems as a work tool particularly with cable-management systems, word-processing and databases would be advantageous.
• Familiarity with the relationship between the University and the Colleges would be advantageous.
• Good interpersonal skills for dealing with a wide range of people at all levels are needed for communicating with College and University staff, with external contractors and local authority officers.
• To be self-managing with an ability to learn new techniques.
• Ability to develop and maintain their own knowledge in their field
