Job Description

Spadework is a charity providing care, support and meaningful opportunities for adults with learning, and other, disabilities as well as supporting those living with dementia and those seeking wellbeing or bereavement support. The aim of Spadework is to support people to be more independent, less isolated and to live happier, healthier and more fulfilling lives.

We are seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Garden Centre Manager to lead our team and oversee the daily operations of our garden centre. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in horticulture, excellent organisational skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with customers and staff. This role requires a love for plants and gardening, as well as the ability to sell products and provide exceptional customer service.

Main Areas of Responsibility:



Manage the operations of Spadework's Garden Centre in line with all organisational policies, processes and procedures. Ensure the efficient day-to-day running of the Garden Centre, optimising income opportunities. Lead and manage all department staff and volunteers. Provide meaningful opportunities for Trainees within the Garden Centre. Uphold the aims, principles and values of Spadework.

Duties and Key Responsibilities:



Oversee all aspects of the Garden Centre's operations, ensuring a high standard of service and presentation. Develop and implement new initiatives to enhance the Garden Centre's provision. Maintain knowledge of current gardening trends, products, and best practices to enhance customer experience. Manage and oversee all purchasing ensuring budget compliance. Monitor and manage departmental budgets effectively. Maintain accurate stock records, providing monthly reports to the Head of Social Enterprises. Ensure stock costs remain within budget and income generation aligns with financial targets. Maintain equipment and machinery in good working condition. Develop and maintain strong relationships with the local community and relevant external stakeholders. Recruit, manage and develop Garden Centre staff and volunteers. Plan and coordinate staff and volunteer rotas. Motivate and supervise team members, setting clear objectives and providing appropriate training and support. Conduct staff performance reviews and implement individual training plans as required. Ensure all staff adhere to Spadework's policies and procedures, including absence management and annual leave. Create and organise meaningful work opportunities for Trainees within the Garden Centre. Ensure Trainee activities align with their development plans and Spadework's wider objectives. Maintain a safe and well-presented working environment at all times. Ensure compliance with Employment Law, Risk Assessments, Health & Safety regulations, Fire Precaution and Prevention and First Aid requirements. Act as a keyholder, supporting the opening and closing of the site as required.

Requirements

:

Proven experience in a managerial role within a retail or garden centre environment is preferred. Strong knowledge of plants, gardening techniques, and horticultural practices. Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Strong communication skills with the ability to engage with customers effectively. A passion for gardening and a desire to share that knowledge with others. Availability to work, ideally, alternate weekends.

Pay: 14.50 per hour
