Firmware Engineer

Edinburgh, SCT, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

Singular Photonics is a leader in the design and development of Single-Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) sensors, advancing imaging technology across scientific, industrial, and commercial applications. Our SPAD sensors enable innovations in fields such as LiDAR, fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM), spectroscopy, and time-resolved optical measurements, providing high-performance solutions for our customers worldwide.

About the Role

:

We are looking for a highly skilled Electronics and FPGA Firmware Designer to join our hardware development team. You will play a key role in designing, developing, and validating high-speed digital electronics and programmable logic for cutting-edge SPAD sensor-based systems. This is an exciting opportunity to work across FPGA firmware, digital circuit design, and system integration for advanced technologies such as image sensors, LiDAR, biomedical devices, or scientific instrumentation.

Key Responsibilities

:

Define FPGA and hardware requirements in collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams.

Design, implement, and verify FPGA firmware for SPAD sensor readout, high-speed data acquisition, and real-time signal processing.

Develop Verilog modules for timing control, data formatting, and communication protocols.

Design and debug digital electronic circuits including component selection, schematic development, and oversight of PCB layout.

Integrate high-speed interfaces such as PCIe, DDR, USB3, Ethernet, MIPI, LVDS, SLVS, and Camera Link.

Perform sensor synchronization, frame capture, and exposure control.

Use simulation tools and test equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analysers) for validation and debugging.

Ensure design optimisation for timing, power, and space (timing closure, floor planning).

Support system integration, prototype bring-up, and field deployment.

Produce thorough technical documentation and participate in design reviews.

Conduct rigorous verification and validation testing to ensure reliability and performance.

Qualifications & Skills

:

Degree in Electronics Engineering (or equivalent), or significant relevant industry experience.

3+ years of hands-on experience in FPGA development and high-speed digital electronics.

Proficiency in Verilog; experience with System Verilog, UVM, and simulation tools is a plus.

Strong grasp of RTL design, synthesis, and timing closure.

Experience with FPGA development tools (e.g., Xilinx Vivado, TCL scripting).

Familiarity with embedded system interfaces (DDR4, USB, PCIe, Ethernet, SPI, IC).

Experience with PCB design tools (e.g., Altium Designer).

Solid understanding of system-level architecture and embedded systems integration.

Confident in using electronic test equipment and debugging digital systems.

Behavioural Competencies:

Innovation & Creativity:

Drive new approaches in SPAD applications.

Collaboration:

Work effectively across teams and with customers.

Initiative & Ownership:
