Services provided include Speech and Language Therapy; Supported Living for adults with learning disabilities; Family Assessment Services for child protection proceedings; Respite Short Breaks; Community based support, Day Opportunity activities for adults with learning disabilities and three retail outlets. With 177 employees across the two organisations Symbol has an established and enthusiastic Senior Leadership Team (SLT) who are working to deliver the best quality care and support to vulnerable individuals, with a focus on gradual growth and ensuring long term sustainability of our services.
Based in rural Bearsted, just outside Maidstone, Kent; we are keen to secure the services of a commercially driven Financial Controller to contribute to our forward-thinking organisation.
Duties will include but are not limited to:
Leadership
Day to day management of a small Finance team, including ongoing training and development, distributing and monitoring of workloads, and annual appraisal process.
Stakeholder Relations & Colleague Support
Lead relationships with the bank, HMRC and Companies House
Work closely with the company Directors and other members of the SLT to optimise company performance in line with the organisation's strategy, agreed objectives and goals
Develop a strong working relationship with KCC and other clients to ensure tight cash management
Support the HR department with payroll matters and liaise with external payroll provider as required
Compliance
Liaise with the external accountant to assist with the preparation of statutory accounts and corporation tax returns
Prepare and submit quarterly VAT returns using the partial exemption method
Manage the external audit process, providing any requested information, reconciliations and schedules to the external auditor on a timely basis
Ensure payments of VAT, corporation tax, PAYE and other statutory payments are made by the respective deadlines
Systems & Controls
Maintain an effective credit control procedure so that debtors remain within agreed parameters and that good working practices are in place
Review and approval of supplier pay runs
Implement and maintain effective workflows to ensure the smooth running of the department
Constantly review systems, processes and controls for potential improvements and streamlining opportunities
Month-End & Management Accounts
Run the month-end close procedure on a timely basis for all entities
Maintain schedules for full balance sheet reconciliations for all entities
Prepare full and detailed monthly management accounts pack with supporting commentary for all entities
Budgets, Forecasts & Cash Management
Prepare P&L forecasts and annual budget, providing Directors with variance and trend analyses for all entities
Prepare 6 monthly reforecast of budgets for all entities
Monitor daily cash flow and prepare regular long and short-term cash flow forecasts for all entities
Support the SLT and Company Directors with business planning, pricing and due diligence processes for potential acquisitions
Act as Company Secretary and pension scheme trustee
Contribute to SLT and Board meetings to ensure that the business is risk managed appropriately
Ideal Qualifications & Skills:
Accountancy qualification (ACCA, ACA, CIMA or equivalent)
3+ years' senior finance experience (finance manager, financial controller etc)
Strong technical accounting experience with a good understanding of VAT and tax compliance
Sector experience would be advantageous
Exposure to group and inter-company activity
Solid budgeting and forecasting experience
A high level of commercial awareness
Leadership excellence
Sound working knowledge of accounting software, Xero in particular
Knowledge of running in-house payroll would be desirable
