Since 2012, we have pioneered innovative methods to create meaningful opportunities for people and communities to take part in real research - from the world's first crowdfunded dig, to large-scale citizen science projects.
We are a values-led social enterprise, registered with the Chartered Institute of Archaeologists, and are proud winners of the Europa Nostra European Heritage Award.
Location
Role can be remote, hybrid, or based in one of our London or Barnard Castle offices.
About The Role
We're seeking an Events & Communications Officer who will thrive on sharing our work with the world. In this role, you'll ensure our stories, discoveries, and impact are understood, celebrated and championed by all our audiences across multiple channels. You'll help to inform, grow, and reward our supporter base, and run campaigns that support specific goals.
You'll also help to design and deliver creative and accessible public events programmes, and can expect to work with wide-ranging communities and people of all ages, through talks, classes, workshops, pop-up exhibitions, festivals, school sessions, and more.
Plus, you'll have the opportunity to be involved in real archaeological fieldwork; as well as collecting content on site, you'll support our team of Community Archaeologists by welcoming Venturers, leading family-friendly dig sessions, and ensuring our Venturers have the best possible experience while they're with us.
This position requires the ability to work away from home, excellent communication skills, and the expectation that you will contribute to community wellbeing within agreed-upon guidelines. Above all, you'll need a commitment to making archaeology, heritage, and nature recovery work accessible and meaningful to the public.
About You
You care about our mission, and have a demonstrable interest in archaeology, heritage, and nature recovery.
You've already got experience in creating compelling content to meet set goals and/or working on multi-channel communications campaigns, in promoting and delivering a range of public events, and you care deeply about making an impact with your work.
You're a natural collaborator who enjoys being part of a team, but you're also confident taking the lead when needed. You'll be excited to explore new and emerging concepts with a curious and open growth mindset, able to engage with and respond to the needs of diverse audiences, and be comfortable working on multiple projects and campaigns while meeting deadlines.
Although you don't need lots of fieldwork experience or a degree (you'll have plenty of opportunity to learn more about field archaeology from our experienced team), you do need to have demonstrable knowledge of the contribution that archaeology, heritage, and nature recovery can make in the world, and be familiar with the historical context, professional standards and ethical frameworks that guide them.
Most importantly, you'll be a champion for public engagement and have a genuine passion for making these fields accessible to everyone.
Key Responsibilities
Supporter engagement.
You'll keep our growing community of Venturers informed, involved, and excited about our work and the projects they're supporting. You'll help to identify compelling stories and develop creative content that highlights the breadth of our work, including the discoveries they've contributed to, as well as the wider social impact of our projects. You'll craft compelling emails, publish updates, host livestreams, and promote opportunities for participation.
Social media.
You'll manage our social media channels, working with our Content Manager to create and schedule posts, engage with others and relevant trends, monitor KPIs, and make creative suggestions that help keep our channels fresh, engaging, and growing.
Campaigns and initiatives.
You'll help to devise and deliver creative, compelling, and impactful cross-channel campaigns that are designed to achieve core strategic goals - from crowdfunding to brand awareness. You'll develop ideas, define user journeys, write, create and publish content, measure impact, and assist with the development of relevant areas of the DigVentures website.
Strategy.
You'll make key contributions to the development and delivery of our wider strategic communications plan, identifying potential campaigns, setting targets and timeframes, and helping to refresh our voice.
In person events and programming.
As well as hosting regular livestreams, you'll help to co-ordinate, promote, and deliver in-person event programmes for individual heritage projects, including talks, hands-on workshops, pop-up exhibitions, festivals, and more.
Press and media.
You'll contribute to local and national press releases at key moments, including new projects and significant discoveries.
Bookings admin and enquiries.
You'll be a key contact for our Venturer community, responding to enquiries, using our CRM to maintain accurate records, prepare registers and contact lists ahead of events, and send out event reminders and follow-up emails.
Reporting.
As well as keeping an eye on social media and content KPIs, you'll use our CRM to help generate reports on project participation and social impact, and contribute to project reports.
Community fieldwork support.
Your involvement in archaeology won't just be through content creation! When you're called to site, you'll also support our team of community archaeologists to welcome Venturers, lead family-friendly 'DigCamp' and 'DigClub' sessions, get hands-on with excavation (with guidance from the field team), and play an active role in ensuring our Venturers have the best possible experience while they're with us.
