Ready to lead the charge on ETCS engineering and training?
As our ETCS Training Engineer, you'll be integral to the project and the go to expert for everything from design review to hands-on system maintenance training and operational instructions. You'll help bring the European Train Control System to life across multiple fleets, working alongside suppliers, operations teams, and OEMs to ensure our people not only understand the technology but can maintain and troubleshoot it with confidence. This role is critical to the success of our ETCS rollout, offering you a chance to shape training strategy and drive project delivery in a fast-paced, safety critical environment.
You'll join us at a pivotal stage: from first article inspections and fault finding through to system testing, implementation and ongoing competence tracking. If you're passionate about turning technical complexity into clear, practical learning, and you love seeing people gain new skills that directly impact safety and reliability, this is an opportunity to make a real impact.
What you'll be doing:
Leading ETCS design reviews, first article inspections, and system fault diagnosis
Developing and delivering training materials, courses, and competency assessments for Maintenance and Engineering teams
Liaising with OEM design and implementation teams to translate technical specs into engaging, practical instruction
Supporting testing, commissioning and verification of ETCS systems across our fleets
Tracking performance metrics, managing software updates, maintenance activities and fault resolution at TrainCare Centres
Contributing to wider rolling-stock strategy projects (e.g. TRU), optimising resource plans and challenging programme assumptions
Monitoring progress, identifying dependencies and risks, and acting as the specialist escalation point for ETCS delivery
About you:
Degree qualified (or equivalent) in engineering, electronics, or a related field
Proven experience delivering training or technical projects in highly regulated, safety critical environments
Strong fault-finding mindset and excellent documentation skills
Ability to develop project scope from concept and translate it into detailed training plans
Exceptional communicator with the ability to challenge and influence stakeholders at all levels
Self-starter who can make day to day decisions independently and escalate strategic risks when needed
Rail industry experience (or from a similar regulated sector), with the drive to own long term strategy and delivery

Why Northern?
We're more than just a train operator. We're the heartbeat of the North - connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,500 trains running daily, we're on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment.
Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, after which rail quickly spread across the globe - and this year, we're celebrating 200 years of the modern railway. As we look back on the historic events that led us here, we also look towards the future as we move into the era of Great British Rail. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.
A place for everyone
The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board.
At Northern, we don't just move people from A to B - we're building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that's something you need. We're also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we'll always offer an interview.
We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and medical assessment.
No matter your background, experience, or whether you call it a bap, barm, or cob... there's a place for you here in the railway.
