QinetiQ
Job title: Engineering Lead
Location: UK Wide (Flexible Hybrid working, must be commutable to a QinetiQ site)
About the role
This is an opportunity to join the systems engineering team who deliver critical capability to test, trial and evaluate MOD Weapons, Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives (OME). As Engineering Lead, you will lead through-life technical delivery and systems engineering activity for projects or work packages. As Engineering Lead, you will also draw on existing technical expertise, whilst broadening systems engineering competencies and personal leadership skill sets; you will contribute to development of best practice and growth of capability around you, mentoring and learning from others.
Weapons Investments IDT is an excellent environment to accelerate development of leadership skills. The OME (Ordnance, Munitions & Explosives) Test and Evaluation facilities are hazardous domains, where safety & security system controls are the infrastructure that enable the delivery of mission critical trials every day. Seeing a project through to completion provides experience that opens up leadership opportunities across QinetiQ\'s Test & Evaluation offerings, proven by the current systems engineers moving onto roles in T3E LTPA Operations, Service Delivery Management and the T&E Global Campaign.
What I will be doing:
There are opportunities to work in the following areas:
IT infrastructure upgrade: The OME Test & Evaluation Facilities are planning a suite of upgrades to enable their IT infrastructure to support the future of Test, Trials, Training and Evaluation (T3E). A systems-leadership approach ensures that the technology and teams will work together to provide an effective output in terms of speed, reliability & cost to our customers. This will include real-time and data intensive reporting demands, persistent integrated security systems, and remote monitoring of safety boundaries. This is a great opportunity to build experience working in IT Systems with the developing Tech Ops capability.
New Range communications: Communication on the T3E Ranges is key to coordinating teams and knowledge sharing, especially important in terms of safety, and emergency response. This set of upgrades means that RF walkie-talkies, landline telephones and data cable comms systems can continue to support the agile delivery of trials - essential because the usual modern combination of WiFi and mobile telephones are unavailable in OME facilities due to safety and security controls. If you are a comms technical expert looking for a step into systems engineering, this could be the right role for you.
Equipment in support of weapons testing: Vibration, Climatic, Drop Test, X-ray, Sand and Dust, Sectioning and Machining. Weapons test facilities are critical to ensuring the ordnance, munitions, and explosives are safe for use, and will work when the end user needs them most. These facilities had their last strategic investment between 20-30 years ago, when the desert environment of front-line operations were challenging equipment. This role will involve bringing together weapons experts, Defence Standards (DEF STAN), WECA (Weapons evaluation and capability assurance), and LTPA safety requirements to create reliable & modern facilities that generate realistic environments for test.
