About ETI

The Environment, Transport & Infrastructure (ETI) directorate is responsible for a wide range of services including highways, environment, transport, planning, countryside and waste management. These services are critical for people living, working and travelling through Surrey, delivered by the county council or in partnership.

About the team

The aim of the Road Safety and Sustainable School Travel Team is to reduce death and injury on Surrey\'s roads and to promote more walking and cycling to school. This is achieved through highway safety engineering and infrastructure improvements, working with the police on the enforcement of road traffic law (particularly using safety cameras), and through education, training and promotional campaigns to improve pedestrian and cycling skills and encouraging alternatives to the car for the school journey.

About the role

In this role, you will undertake collision hotspot analysis and investigation leading to the development and commissioning of highway improvement schemes to reduce road casualties. To do this, you will undertake road safety audits of the highway improvement schemes, as well as the commission of the maintenance of road safety related highway infrastructure such as vehicle activated signs and school safety signs.

This will require a close working relationship with police and local highways colleagues with whom speed management plans are also developed to identify and tackle the worst speeding problem sites.

Other duties will include:
  • Checking and analysing the history of collisions at sites where there has been a fatality,
  • Assisting in the investigation of opportunities to improve signing in order to reduce bridge strikes by over height vehicles.
  • Advising on opportunities to improve highway infrastructure outside schools so as to improve road safety and promote walking and cycling,
  • Completion of annual assessments of school crossing patrols.
