Palgrave Macmillan specialises in cutting-edge academic books in the Humanities and Social Sciences. It publishes monographs, journals, textbooks, professional and reference works, in subjects ranging from Political Science, Economics and History, to Literature, Linguistics and Business.

Job Title: Editor, Sociology - Palgrave Macmillan

Location: Kings Cross , London (Hybrid Working)

Full Time Position, Fixed Term Contract

We publish monographs, journals, textbooks, professional and reference works, in print and online. In subjects ranging from Political Science, Economics and History, to Literature, Linguistics and Sociology, the list contains original works by many of the foremost scholars, writers and editors in the world, including Nobel laureates and internationally recognized experts.

The Editor will acquire and publish content within part of the existing sociology portfolio. They will work with other Sociology Editors and the Sociology+ team head to drive growth and develop the portfolio as part of the strategically defined overall portfolio of the Publishing Unit.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify authors and support them in developing and producing their projects
  • Solicit, read and evaluate book proposals offered by authors, as well as assess their suitability for the list
  • Meet goals set by editorial management such as contracts signed and manuscripts handed over to production
  • Maintain profitable relationships with book series editors, authors and advisors
  • Negotiate contract terms with authors
  • Remain a point of contact for authors/editors throughout the publication process
  • Research market trends on a national and international level
  • Manage the back-list, make decisions on publishing potential and new editions of successful titles
  • Conduct market and competitive research in assigned subject area
  • Business travel to conferences (domestic and international) as required
  • Work closely with the editorial support teams to ensure book projects are published to schedule
Experience, skills and qualifications:

Essential
  • Excellent English language skills
  • Educated at least to degree level or equivalent
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and be numerate and IT systems-literate.
  • A strong attention to detail
  • Be able to organise and prioritise numerous tasks
  • Able to use your initiative, be resourceful and proactive in dealing with problems and queries
  • Strong team-working skills and the ability to communicate with internal and external stakeholders at all levels
  • Excellent networking skills
  • Ability to work independently within a team environment
Desirable
  • Demonstrate diplomacy and assertiveness
  • Previous experience in academic publishing
