The Department

The People team play a key role in enabling the firm to attract, develop and retain great people, and giving them the tools and support needed to develop and fulfil their potential, and that of the firm. The team is welcoming, inclusive, driven by providing a \'high touch\' level of service, and collaborative in terms of how we work. The team consists of c.50 people in both business-facing, generalist roles (Advisory) alongside specialist teams (Data & Systems; Reward; Diversity, Inclusion & Wellbeing; Employment, Policy & Engagement; Talent Acquisition, as well as our Academy, which consists of Academy Learning, Academy Tech and Early Careers).

Early Careers Team

The Early Careers Team (EC Team) manage the recruitment and ongoing support of approximately 20 apprentices, 60 graduate trainees, and regular cohorts of work experience students and interns.

There are five members of the team: one Manager, two Advisors and two Assistants. The team is split into two areas: one Advisor & Assistant look after the attraction and recruitment of our Graduates and Apprentices (including work experience, internships and outreach programmes); the other Advisor & Assistant are responsible for the performance management and development of our Trainees and Apprentices; and the transition into the wider Firm upon qualification.

This assistant role will focus on the second area (development), although they will have exposure to tasks across both areas of the team.

Key Responsibilities/Duties

  • Organisation and participation in the candidate attraction process including law fairs, open days, work experience, school outreach and other marketing events.
  • Proactive management of the applicant tracking system (cvMail) across all Early Career roles, including apprenticeships, open days, work experience events, internships, paralegals and graduates.
  • Working with EDI partner organisations such as the Social Mobility Business Partnership, UpTree, Sutton Trust, Rare Recruitment and other similar organisations.
  • Uploading job descriptions and coordinating the advertisement of roles on our careers site, LinkedIn, training providers and other channels.
  • Reviewing graduate, internship, apprenticeship and paralegal applications.
  • Scheduling, coordinating & conducting virtual & in-person assessments including: video interviews & case studies for graduates; assessment days for apprenticeships; interviews & competency tests for paralegals; and other ad hoc assessments as required.
  • Communicating outcomes and providing constructive feedback to candidates.
  • Responding to candidate queries, internal queries and management of the Early Careers email inbox.
  • Completing onboarding for Early Careers candidates including: creating contracts & offer letters, right to work checks and uploading onto our internal HR system.
  • Working with the Academy team to organise the Early Career induction programmes, ongoing support and department issues as they arise.
  • Administration and organisation of training providers including scheduling time at college, coordinating coaches and completing required forms so the apprenticeship levy can be accessed.
  • Note taking and participation at internal feedback meetings.
  • Assisting with data collation and reporting.
  • Responding to reference requests for the early careers population.
  • Participation in wider HR projects.
  • Support the Early Careers Team in dealing with apprenticeship, trainee & paralegal HR related issues.
  • General recruitment related paperwork including processing of invoices and expenses.
Skills/Attributes
  • At least one year of recruitment or HR related experience ideally gained within a professional services environment.
  • Education to degree level (or equivalent) or HR apprenticeship.
  • Working knowledge of an applicant tracking system (cvMail or other) is desirable.
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written communication skills and confident phone manner.
  • Enthusiastic and proactive approach to work.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Able to work on multiple projects/priorities at one time and adapt quickly to change.
