Job Description

An opportunity has arisen for a Hatch counter assistant to work in our busy rural dispensary at our Sudbury surgery. With the support of the Dispensary manager and the dispensing team, you will safely hand out medications to our patients as well as deal With queries that may arise at the hatch and on the telephone. This is an 18.5 hour per week post working Monday 9-11 and 2.30-5.30, Tuesday 2.30-5.30, Wednesday 2.30-5.30 and Friday 9-5.30 (with one hour unpaid lunch break).

Duties for Dispensary Counter Assistant :



Responsible to the Senior team

1. You will hand out patient drugs at the dispensary hatch in line with practice policies and protocols.

2. To provide general admin duties such as answering the telephone, dealing with queries at the dispensary hatch, checking patients have signed their prescription forms and to collect levy money from those patients required to pay.

3. You will check all orders from the wholesalers and store the drug in the appropriate area. To highlight PA drugs on the invoice.

4. To operate the cash till which records NHS prescription income and private charges. This includes updating prices e.g. private charges and VAT changes. To help with the banking as and when required.

5. To be responsible for removing expired stock from the shelves according to the stock maintenance sheet.

6. To ensure stock in your designated stock section are fit for purpose

7. To re-stock the dispensary with bags, bottles, caps and closures and re-order where necessary.

8. To be responsible for the patient returns. This includes the segregation of returns from normal stock and ensuring that the drugs are disposed of in the correct safe manner according to the SOP.

9. The post holder will be required to work flexibly and a strong team approach will need to be demonstrated by the candidate.

10. You will be expected to undertake the necessary training to reach the competencies required for in this post in the agreed timescales with the Dispensary Manager. This also includes mandatory Health and Safety Training as and when the practice holds these events.

11. All patient information that you come into contact with must be dealt with in the strictest of confidence. Any breach in confidence can lead to instant dismissal. Confidentiality guidelines are available for you to read and will be incorporated into your training.

12. Health and Safety is everyone's responsibility. You will be made aware of any risks or hazardous substances that are on the premises and the protocols to follow to avoid exposure or contact. You also have a duty to work in a manner that does not put other staff at risk. The Practice Manager will act as the Health and Safety co-ordinator and will have details on any particular concerns or issues you may have.

In the performance of the duties outlined in this , the post-holder may have access to confidential information relating to patients and their carers, Practice staff and other healthcare workers. They may also have access to information relating to the Practice as a business organisation. All such information from any source is to be regarded as strictly confidential

Information relating to patients, carers, colleagues, other healthcare workers or the business of the Practice may only be divulged to authorised persons in accordance with the Practice policies and procedures relating to confidentiality and the protection of personal and sensitive data

Health & Safety:



The post-holder will assist in promoting and maintaining their own and others' health, safety and security as defined in the Practice Health & Safety Policy, to include:

Using personal security systems within the workplace according to Practice guidelines

Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks

Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skill

Familiarisation with and adherence to Safeguarding policies is an essential requirement of all employees as is participation in related mandatory/statutory training. 17. We operate a No Smoking Policy.
