The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) are looking to hire an innovative Deputy Director, Scientific Data & Insight on a permanent basis. This is a unique career opportunity to realise the potential of data across the Agency.

The MHRA is made up of c.1300 staff working across two main centres, in Canary Wharf as part of the Government Hub, and in South Mimms near Potters Bar, where our laboratories are located. We also have staff who work peripatetically across the UK and abroad.

We now have new opportunities to innovate and support more definitive and timely regulatory decisions with the scale, scope, and volume of healthcare and related data available. Increasingly, this is from the patients themselves. Data and analytics has the potential to deliver real time information on both benefits and risks - you can play a pivotal role in this as Deputy Director, Scientific Data & Insights.

The Deputy Director, Scientific Data & Insight will provide professional leadership to 16 specialist staff with responsibility for addressing data needs for both medicines and devices. We are looking for an individual who will apply their thought leadership and networking skills to drive the development of new data sources; improve accessibility of real world data; and forge collaborative partnerships with colleagues from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) \xe2\x80\x93 the MHRA\'s specialist real world data research service \xe2\x80\x93 to improve the surveillance and evaluation of medicines and devices.

As a key member of the Senior Leadership Team and wider One Agency Leadership community, you will develop and drive the strategic direction and priorities of the function, facilitate delivery of overarching Agency data initiatives, and build credible and collaborative working relationships with a range of external stakeholders.

Applicants should demonstrate the following criteria in their application:

  • A strong and inclusive corporate and team leader, experience in the management of professional qualified staff, confident in both people leadership and policy development in an operational context, with the gravitas to earn the respect of stakeholders.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and influencing skills, and the credibility and ability to build excellent relationships and networks with key stakeholders across organisational boundaries.
  • Knowledge and understanding of working in a regulatory environment would be an advantage but is not essential.
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline e.g. data science, computer science, medical engineering, toxicology, medical physics, biomaterials or healthcare professional qualification or equivalent qualifications or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrable track record of developing databases and innovative data visualisation solutions incorporating AI methodologies.
  • Demonstrable leadership of research, research applications and policy/guidelines relating to AI and machine learning methodologies.
