This is an exciting opportunity to drive ministerial priorities and support delivery of the Defence Industrial Strategy (DIS). As part of the largest and most complex commercial function in government, this role offers a unique chance to work on high-profile, high-impact initiatives that will strengthen defence's collaboration with industry and improve the resilience of supply chains.



Sitting within the Supply Chain Directorate (SCD), part of MOD Head Office, this role is key in delivering strategic engagements with industry, working with senior MOD officials and the defence sector to tackle Defence's most pressing challenges.


As the Defence Industry Joint Council (DIJC) Programme Coordinator, you will be a central player in the MOD's primary mechanism for partnering with defence industry leaders, small-medium-sized enterprises, technology innovators, investors, academia, Trade Associations and Trade Unions. The DIJC is co-chaired by the Secretary of State for Defence and is a critical lever for shaping policy, driving innovation, and enhancing our industrial capability.


The DIJC's purpose and objectives include:

Facilitating strategic engagement between the MOD and sector partners. Supporting the delivery of the DIS and ensure alignment with MOD procurement and capability development. Addressing defence industrial base challenges, including supply chain resilience, workforce skills, and innovation. Providing an effective platform for MOD and sector partners to from defence sector recommendations.

You will provide programme management expertise to the DIJC Programme Management Office (PMO) team. The role's key responsibilities include developing and managing the DIJC membership, supporting the organisation and delivery of DIJC engagements, and managing DIJC communication channels (including emails, newsletters, website, and social media). The role will also include the coordination of workshops and ad-hoc events, where collaboration with broader MOD communications teams is essential. You will act as the first point of contact for the DIJC PMO team, responding in a timely and professional manner, confidently engaging with senior stakeholders and escalating as required.


This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description




This is a varied role which spans a diverse portfolio of work. The postholder will be a key part of the DIJC PMO, led by the DIJC Head of Programme. You will report directly to a DIJC Forum Lead and provide dedicated business, programme management, and secretariat support to the various groups operating across the DIJC.


The DIJC programme of activity will include:

DIJC top council meetings: delivering high-profile quarterly meetings chaired by the Secretary of State for Defence and attended by senior MOD officials and sector executives. DIJC supporting structures: supporting effective collaboration between the MOD and defence sector partners, reporting into and delivering the recommendations of the DIJC top council. DIJC Communications Forum: a bi-monthly engagement event attended by representatives from across the defence enterprise.

Responsibilities



Specific activities and responsibilities will include the following:


Governance Support:



Develop and maintain the DIJC membership, ensuring accurate records of MOD and defence sector representatives. Coordinate and manage meeting logistics, including scheduling, venue arrangements, invitations, and agendas. Manage meeting governance, including preparing briefing materials and reports for senior MOD officials, ministers and defence sector partners. Monitor and track key DIJC deliverables and outputs, ensuring timely follow-up and resolution.

Stakeholder Engagement & Communications:



Act as a key point of contact between the MOD and defence sector representatives. Draft and distribute communications, newsletters, and updates to DIJC members. Manage digital communication channels.

Programme & Project Support:



Support the development and implementation of DIJC initiatives as part of the Defence Industrial Strategy. Conduct data collection, analysis, and reporting on key defence sector topics. Contribute to the continuous improvement of DIJC processes and governance structures. ###

The post holder will have the opportunity to develop extensive secretariat and programme management skills, in addition to gaining broad knowledge of the defence supply base and industrial strategy policy environment, spanning some of the department's most interesting focus areas. There will also be frequent opportunities to engage with ministers and senior officials, including the preparation of submissions and briefings.


The role also offers significant levels of exposure to senior defence sector executives along with MOD Ministers and senior officials, offering the opportunity for the successful candidate to develop a broad and impactful network across defence.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance. The post does not offer relocation expenses.


External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.
