The School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham are seeking to recruit a Deepmind Academic Fellow. The first three years of this position are supported by a donation from DeepMind, a leading AI research organisation committed to solving intelligence to advance science and benefit humanity. The Fellowship encourages an early career researcher to pursue three years of independent postdoctoral study in the fields of Computer Science (CS), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and interdisciplinary applications of AI. Their research will not be directed or influenced by DeepMind. Following the initial three-year appointment, the Fellow will transition into a permanent academic position subject to meeting probationary criteria and will be encouraged to develop a research profile that will support progression into full academic or other research leadership roles in future.
The DeepMind Academic Fellowship programme is part of DeepMind\'s commitment to increase diversity in AI. The Fellowship aims to improve representation from currently under-represented demographic groups in academic positions in CS and AI at leading institutions and to nurture role models and ambassadors who will train the next generation of researchers. This Fellowship is open to early-career researchers who have recently completed a PhD in AI, CS, Machine Learning, Statistics or another relevant field. The University of Birmingham and DeepMind recognise that Black early-career researchers are particularly under-represented in this field at this level, and strongly encourage them to apply.
The successful applicant will be joining one of the leading UK institutions for research and teaching in computer science. The School\'s research is ranked third across all UK universities, both in average score for publications and number of world-leading publications, according to the recent UK-wide Research Excellence Framework 2021. Employment prospects of our students are also in the top three in the UK according to 2021 data. While pursuing excellence in research and education, we also aim to optimize our positive impact on society; examples include collaborations with industry partners and government, outreach activities and an extensive wider participation programme. To support its aims, the School offers a vibrant, open and intellectually stimulating work environment in its dedicated computer science building that houses eighty-two researchers and supports the education of well over one thousand students.
The Fellow will be provided with opportunities for mentoring by both DeepMind researchers and academic staff at the University of Birmingham. Where research directions are aligned, DeepMind welcomes the opportunity to cooperate and collaborate with the Fellow. The Fellow will also be invited to seminars and talks organised by DeepMind.
