Join a highly multidisciplinary team at Swansea University Medical School (1st medical school in the UK by the ) to conduct population mental health research, analysing a world-class population-level dataset containing billions of records using a mix of traditional and novel analytical methodologies. This is an exciting opportunity to make your work count, with the potential to have real impact on policy decision in Wales and peoples\xe2\x80\x99 mental health and quality of life.
You will be based in a thriving mental health research team with over \xc2\xa340M in joint funding over the last five years, where you will be able to learn new skills and will be supported throughout your career development. You will apply your research, analytical and/or programming expertise to answer mental health related questions across the team\xe2\x80\x99s and the Administrative Data Research ( ) Wales partnership\xe2\x80\x99s portfolios, including and the Data Science theme of the . In doing so, you will address mental health priority areas for action in Wales as identified in the Welsh Government\xe2\x80\x99s national strategy , UK and internationally. Your work will result in the publication of research findings as policy briefings and high-impact journal papers.
The team is led by Prof. Ann John, chair of the National Advisory Group on suicide and self-harm prevention to Welsh Government, member of SAGE and Trustee of the . Swansea University Medical School ranked 1st in the UK for research environment and 2nd for overall research quality at the last Research Excellence Framework. It has a renowned reputation in Health Informatics and is a substantive site. The Adolescent Mental Health Data Platform ( ) and the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage ( ) Databanks at Swansea University are research Centres of Excellence that bring together a breadth of multi-disciplinary partners through catalytic collaboration. They are a safe haven for billions of person-based records, spanning up to 20 years from an entire population, which enables researchers to answer important questions for the benefit of society.
The successful applicant will have a background in data science and/or clinical epidemiology, have enthusiasm and aptitude for working with mental health related data. Preferably, you will be experienced in the use of large relational databases through SQL, be fluent in a programming language such as R, Stata or Python, and have knowledge of routine big data such as GP records and hospital admissions.
