The Role

This could be the perfect time for you to join us in our Crime Department as a Coroner\xe2\x80\x99s Officer.

You will be the main point of contact for the Coroner\xe2\x80\x99s Office and will communicate with a range of stakeholders including bereaved relatives and family representatives; doctors and other health professionals; emergency services; registrars of births and deaths; funeral directors; pathologists and mortuary staff. You will take the report of a death, create a record, and obtain all the relevant information so that the coroner can make a decision on how to proceed with the case.

What you\xe2\x80\x99ll do

\xc2\xb7 Conduct proper investigation into reports of deaths that are unnatural, violent, occurred in state detention or where the cause of death is unknown, working on the direction of HM Coroner and in conjunction with the force and medical professionals.

\xc2\xb7 Act within the scope of Coronial law, including the Coroners and Justice Act 2009, the Coroner\xe2\x80\x99s (Investigations) Regulations 2013, the Coroners (Inquests) Rules 2013, Notification of Deaths Regulations 2019 and other relevant statutory provisions and case law to ensure compliance with the Chief Coroner\xe2\x80\x99s written advice and guidance and the Human Tissue Act 2004.

\xc2\xb7 Receive reports of deaths referred to the Coroner, confirm the correct cause of death has been established, and that formal identification of the body is completed in an ethical and empathetic manner.

\xc2\xb7 Attend forensic post-mortem examinations.

\xc2\xb7 Obtain and review evidence and information to assist the judicial decision-making process

\xc2\xb7 Analyse, investigate, present and record information relevant to the circumstances of the death, attend post-mortem examinations when necessary, ensuring pathologists are provided with relevant information, that samples are dispatched appropriately, and that the integrity of exhibits is preserved in accordance with the HTA/PACE.

\xc2\xb7 Maintain contact with relatives and all Interested Persons on behalf of the Coroner, providing updates as and when necessary, to ensure the smooth progress of Coroners functions.

What you\xe2\x80\x99ll need

Essential:

\xc2\xb7 An ability to use a variety of computer programmes.

\xc2\xb7 An understanding of the work conducted by the Coroner.

\xc2\xb7 An ability to plan work, prioritise and deliver timely investigations at the direction of the coroner.

\xc2\xb7 An ability to identify problems and identify alternative options and solutions.

\xc2\xb7 Able to work as part of a team to deliver an outstanding service.

\xc2\xb7 An ability to communicate effectively and compassionately with all those who engage with the Coronial service.

\xc2\xb7 The ability to deliver difficult and sensitive messages.

\xc2\xb7 Data handling skills with a firm understanding of GDPR.

\xc2\xb7 Physical and emotional resilience to deal with the often-sensitive material which relates to death including digital material and an ability to support the resilience and wellbeing of colleagues.

Desirable:

\xc2\xb7 Experience in dealing with bereavement.

\xc2\xb7 An understanding of medical terminology.

\xc2\xb7 Investigative experience.

\xc2\xb7 Experience of the court process and rules of evidence. A knowledge of people and society. Educated to degree level or with other relevant experience.
