Job Description


Consultant in Clinical Oncology with Urology and Upper GI Cancer sites and sessions in Addenbrookes for Radiotherapy.

Applications are invited for a full time post of Consultant Clinical Oncologist for duties at Bedford Hospital, part of the Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Addenbrookes Hospital, part of the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The two Trusts form part of the East of England Strategic Clinical Network serving 1.3 million people.

The appointee would join a team of 6 existing Oncology Consultants working between Bedford and Addenbrookes Hospitals, providing a cohesive, multi-disciplinary service for the treatment of Urology and Upper GI cancers and would also work as part of the Acute Oncology Team. The post would involve spending 3 days in Bedford and 1 day in Cambridge per week.
Main duties of the job

  • To provide specialist Oncological services to the population served by the Bedford Hospital NHS trust in conjunction with Prof Thomas, Dr Bulusu, Dr Smith, Dr Aslam and Dr Ahmad with special reference to Urology and Upper GI
  • To provide specialist Oncological services to the Cambridge population in with special reference to Urology and Upper GI cancer
  • To work with consultant colleagues and primary care services to develop rapid routes of referral for cancer patients
  • To liaise with clinical colleagues in Medicine, Surgery, Haematology and palliative care to assist in providing a seamless service for patients transferring between the different aspect of the service
  • To liaise with Colleagues in Medicine Surgery and the surgical specialities to provide regular cover for patients with neutropenic sepsis and other oncological complications.
  • To collaborate with colleagues at the Cancer Centre, Cancer Units and other agencies to ensure optimum quality of care for cancer patients
  • To participate in clinical research

  • To work with colleagues and the radiotherapy and chemotherapy standards setting group in consultation with the directorate management structure to manage developments in oncology and the introduction of new drugs and technologies at Addenbrooke\'s and the network.

The unit provides a full complement of high quality, clinical and support services and is a cancer treatment unit with facilities to treat a wide range of cancers areas including breast, colorectal, lung, prostate, gastric, lymphoma and gynaecology. The Primrose unit team is made up of six consultants, Chemotherapy Nurse Practitioners and a nursing team, all of whom work very closely with other departments within Bedford Hospital and with the radiology centre at Addenbrooke\'s Hospital to ensure a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care and to offer a truly holistic service to all patients at each stage of their cancer journey. There is also a weekly Gynae SMDT between Bedford and Addenbrookes.

  • Provision with Consultant colleagues of a service to Bedford Hospital and Addenbrooke\'s Hospital, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department
  • Cover for colleagues\' annual leave and other authorised absences
  • Any responsibility, which relates to a special interest
  • Participating in medical audit, the Trusts Clinical Governance processes and in CPD
  • Involvement in research locally and in liaison with Cambridge.
  • Where it is agreed between the parties, work on behalf of Addenbrooke\'s Hospital such as domiciliary consultations, or services provided by the Trust for other agencies, e.g. the prison service. (This excludes work done under direct arrangements between an individual Consultant and a third party, e.g. Category 2
