Job Description

Applications are invited for a full-time (10 Programmed Activities, (PAs)) Consultant Psychiatrist post in the Mental Health Service in Rampton Hospital. The final programme of activities will be worked out with the post-holder and respective Service, but will include 10 programmed activities, including direct clinical care (7.5 PAs) and supporting activities (2.5 PAs). This is a replacement post.



Applicants must be eligible for registration on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register, have Approved Clinician status and be approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act.



Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists is preferred, but

equivalent qualifications and experience would be considered.

Any Consultant who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will

be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed,

modification to the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with

the Trust in consultation with Consultant colleagues.



Please note applicants will be required to pay for their DBS check. Costs are deducted from salary following appointment. The cost of the DBS application is 26.40 (standard) or 54.40 (enhanced), this cost will be deducted from your salary over the first 2 months of employment.



You are encouraged to enrol for the DBS Update Service. An annual fee of 16 per year applies.



The post-holder will be involved as a member of the multi-disciplinary team in the assessment and treatment of mentally disordered offenders. The post has responsibility for a caseload of 20 patients.



For suitably experienced candidates it may be possible to negotiate an academic / research session. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the training of medical students, resident doctors and other disciplines.



The duties of the post are subject to change from time to time in the light of changing requirements of the service, in consultation with the post-holder.



The post-holder will also be involved in assessing patients referred to the Rampton Hospital Mental Health Service. Referrals will be shared among consultants working within the Mental Health Service.



Participate in and contribute to the development of clinical governance, quality assurance and audit, with support from the Audit Department where appropriate.



Contribute to plans for ongoing service development in the Mental Health Service under the Clinical Director.



Share administrative duties including provision of information, data and reports required for management of services.



Be an active member of medical staffing structures.



Provide clinical and managerial supervision to non-consultant career grade doctors on the team (these doctors are line managed by the Associate Medical Director).

Clinical duties of the post-holder at Rampton Hospital will include:



Assessment of individuals referred for admission to Rampton Hospital or for an opinion from the service. This will require travelling to medium secure units, and prisons within the United Kingdom. Acting as Care Programme Approach Co-ordinator and overseeing the treatment of patients in their care. Chairing clinical team meetings, convening and chairing CPA meetings and leadership of the MDT. Providing timely reports to Tribunals, Hospital Managers, Ministry of Justice, Courts etc. Liaison with medium secure and other units, prisons, Commissioners and Ministry of Justice in relation to the care pathway of patients under their care. Convening and chairing Section 117 meetings.

Develop personal skills and a knowledge base as agreed through personal development plan by a peer group and annual appraisal.



Undertake professional supervision as appropriate.



Contribute to the supervision and training needs of staff within the team and beyond as appropriate.



Comply with Trust guidance and policies, including those on child protection and vulnerable adults.



Comply with statutory and non-statutory regulations and guidelines as required by the Trust.



Undertake clinical audits.
