Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) is seeking to appoint a Conservation Officer, seconded to Forestry England Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest, to support the establishment of the Global Conservation Consortium for Conifers (GCCC), led by the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE).
This role will include gathering data from our global network on current conservation actions for conifers for a comprehensive gap analysis to help prioritise where future conservation efforts are needed. The appointed person will also provide support to RBGE on coordination of the GCCC. Candidates for this post will be self-motivated, demonstrate an interest in conifer conservation and have a strong record of data handling and report writing.
Forestry England Bedgebury National Pinetum is in Goudhurst, Kent and is part of the East England Forest District. The East District employs over 150 staff, covers an area of 35,000 ha from North Norfolk to Brighton. Huge conifer plantations in Norfolk contrast with small ancient woodlands in Essex and Kent; along with two beautiful arboretums \xe2\x80\x93 the National Pinetum at Bedgebury and the Lynford Arboretum.
Conifers are a diverse and iconic group of over 600 species with an uneven distribution, found on all continents except the treeless Antarctica. A third of conifer species are assessed as threatened on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, from factors including logging and wood harvesting, habitat loss from agriculture, livestock farming and human development, as well as increasing impacts from climate change. This widespread and threatened group requires increased conservation action; identifying and prioritizing species of greatest concern will establish a basis for implementing ex situ and in situ conservation strategies.
Deadline: 12th October 2023
Salary: c.\xc2\xa326,500 per annum
Contract Type: Full-time, fixed-term (2 years)
Location: Bedgebury National Pinetum (with an option for hybrid working)
Interviews to take place: week commencing 23rd October 2023
