Job Description

To be managerially and technically responsible to the Operational Manger in the area assigned for all ongoing managerial, administrative and professional matters. To be professionally accountable for matters that affects the calibration, servicing and maintenance of medical electronic equipment to the Operational Manger in the area assigned. To be responsible to the consultant physicians in the Renal Unit for all clinical matters. To manage the technical services in the Renal Unit, and to ensure that these services are provided in accordance with the requirements and practices specified by the consultant physicians of the Unit.



To be accountable for first line reporting and communication on the following: Sickness, Grievance, Disciplinary, Capability and Appraisals. Also to identify any training needs for the team and report back to Senior Chief Clinical Technologist. To develop and maintain the technical standards and procedures for dialysis and water treatment equipment. The majority of these procedures will be complex.



To co-operate closely with Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering staff with regard to electronic and mechanical aspects of the safety and development of renal dialysis equipment. To participate in other aspects of the technical work within the High Dependency and Medical Electronics services, as required. To be responsible for the installation, commissioning, maintenance, trial, evaluation and repair of all dialysis equipment and water treatment apparatus used within the Trust for the renal dialysis service, with responsibility for water treatment and associated medical equipment elsewhere in the Trust. To carry out clinical and technical duties associated with non-routine specialised treatments, such as haemofiltration, plasmapherisis, immunoadsorption and haemoperfusion as required by consultant physicians.



To be responsible for clinical and technical duties associated with the ambulatory BP monitoring service provided by the renal technicians, and as necessary and appropriate to compile clinical reports for consultant physicians. To manage the technical work of contracted services to commercially owned dialysis units, providing a comprehensive specialist technical support service which will include the dialysis equipment, water treatment plant and technical advice, and collation of service sheet for invoicing in full compliance with the terms of the contract. To develop further, and fulfil, the role of a clinically based Clinical Technologist, working closely with the patient and meeting the requirements of medical and nursing staff, especially in critical care areas, where advanced technology and complex clinical techniques require this level of support. To manage the technical work associated with the provision of the comprehensive support service to the Renal Satellite Units at Cannock Chase Hospital, Maurice Jackson Unit, and any future new units, providing a complete service for the calibration, maintenance and repair of all dialysis equipment, water treatment plant and other medical equipment.

To be managerially responsible for the IM&T/Technical services provided to the Renal Unit and all dependent satellite units. To contribute as required, and appropriate, in recruitment selection and Clinical Governance and Controls Assurance matters. To ensure that the highest possible skill levels are achieved, and that these standards are maintained by the technical staff within the Unit.



To use personal initiative and specialist expertise wherever appropriate in order to optimise the workflow and priorities within the Unit. To be responsible for the training, to any required level as appropriate, of medical, nursing and technical staff in the Renal Unit and elsewhere in the Trust. To be responsible for the safety of dialysis equipment and the workshop area in general, particularly with regard to patient and staff safety. To ensure that the consultant physicians in the Renal Unit are informed immediately of any matter that might affect the safety of the patient.



To be responsible for maintaining records of equipment, repairs, hazards, etc relating to the technical service. To contribute towards the training of patients in the use of dialysis equipment. To provide technical advice to medical and other staff as appropriate. To carry out administrative duties which may be required for the efficient running of the service and the management of the resources of the Group, with a view to achieving value for money in the delivery of the services.



To collate matters associated with annual leave, sick leave, on-call, overtime, etc, and to communicate this information as appropriate to the Operational Manager / Head of Clinical Engineering. To participate in any future expansion of dialysis facilities including home or community-based dialysis services and future satellite unit developments provided by the Trust by contributing specialist expertise and advice in the development, commissioning and on-going management of the technical service. To take the lead in any research and development work undertaken by the Renal Unit technical officers. To participate in laid down work schedules and to assist in maintenance of records of equipment maintenance, repairs, hazards, etc.



which may be relevant to the technical support service, including the implementation of new and revised protocols and standards, such as HS11 Management of Medical Devices Trust Policy, Managing Medical Devices (April 2015), Clinical Governance, CQC, Standards for Better Health and other applicable standards and policies. To ensure, that at all times as agreed a technician is available to clinical users within an agreed maximum time, following an initial call. To co-operate closely with all Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering staff with regard to electronic and mechanical aspects of safety, on-going maintenance and development of Medical Equipment. To contribute towards the development of computer-based systems used within the Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Department.



To conform to the systems, processes and procedures as detailed in the departments ISO 9001:2015 Quality Manual and draft versions of this manual. To contribute as required to the continual improvement of the departments Quality Management System, including its systems, processes and procedures. To conform to the systems, processes and procedures required to interact with the departments IQM Document Management System. To contribute as required towards the training of other staff, and to co-operate with medical, nursing and other staff.



To be available for travel to other hospitals as required. To be available for on-call and overtime work as necessary. To demonstrate a flexible approach to the needs of the Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering Department. To conform to safe working practices, and departmental policies and procedures.



To undertake any other duties which may be required by the Head of Department, the Head of Clinical Engineering or the Operational Managers and which are appropriate to the post. This may be reviewed periodically in the light of developing work requirements. The post holder will be expected to contribute to that review.
