One clinical fellow post is available from February 2024 for an initial period of six months, renewable by mutual agreement. Applicants should be ST 6-7 or post-CCT Anaesthetists with the FRCA (or equivalent) and have an interest in perioperative medicine and pre-operative risk assessment. The aim of this fellowship is to provide the applicant with experience in all aspects of perioperative medicine in preparation for pursuing this interest as consultant and the post has been designed to meet the criteria for advanced training.
Main duties of the job
Alongside the clinical experience available in theatres, this post would provide training and experience in all other aspects of perioperative medicine including:
Preoperative optimization, risk stratification and shared decision making through participation in our High-Risk Anaesthetic Clinics, IV iron service, CPET clinics and surgical specialty MDT meetings.
Quality improvement in intraoperative care we have established enhanced recovery pathways for most of our surgical specialties and you would be involved in both delivering and developing these.
Analgesic modalities for major surgery training available in wide variety of techniques for both awake and asleep surgery including thoracotomy, major abdominal surgery, breast and orthopaedics.

There are multiple opportunities to gain experience teaching junior doctors and other healthcare professionals with tutorials/OSCE/high fidelity simulation via our active education department
The post has a senior level of on-call clinical commitment which is primarily out of hours (night time and weekend) work. The on-call role is to oversee and assist 2 trainees in the Intensive Care Unit, participating in handover rounds and pro-actively managing patients in the ICU, and to oversee and assist 2 anaesthetic trainees in theatres, labour ward and anywhere else in the hospital where senior level anaesthetic or critical care input is required. Outside of the on-call commitment the rest of your job plan is entirely dedicated to achieving your personal goals within perioperative medicine. With the multiple opportunities on offer and a flexible approach from the department, you will be able to tailor your experience and training to optimise your CV.
Surrey University Campus is adjacent to the hospital and provides excellent opportunities for collaboration in research. The New Postgraduate Medical School building opened in 2005, and houses the MATTU (minimal access therapy training unit). The European Institute of Health Studies which is situated in Guildford provides training for nurses, midwives and other health care professionals both from the Trust and throughout Health Authority. The University of Surrey provides BSc (Hons) Nursing Degree programme.
The department has an active research interest and all post holders will be expected to complete audit and / or original research during their period of training. The CPX service is involved in a multi-centre study investigating vagal dysfunction and post-
operative outcomes (POM-HR), the successful applicant would be expected to become an active participant in this project and other potential collaborative studies.
Research activity in the department is well established with patients enrolled into large multi-centre trials (including PROWESS-SHOCK, TRACMAN, OPTIMISE, EuSOS, and Promise) as well as local investigator-led trials predominantly regarding enhanced recovery, cardiac output monitoring and optimisation of fluid resuscitation and analgesia. Patients have recently been enrolled into Calories, OBTAIN, DREAMS, ETPOS, ENIGMA-2 and LAS VEGAS. We have recently formed a research group Surrey Perioperative Anaesthesia Critical care collaborative Research Group (SPACeR) and this is now a Clinical Academic Group (CAG) with the University of Surrey and Ashford and St. Peters NHS Foundation Trust: http://www.spacer.org.uk/. Several clinicians hold honorary lecturer positions at the University. There are currently research fellows based in anaesthesia and in ICU and all post holders will be expected to complete a quality improvement program, audit and / or original research during their period of training. All post holders will be allocated a mentor at the beginning of their post to assist with this.
