About the role...
Your job will support the UK MoD Boxer and International Bridge Programs by obtaining, monitoring and analysing Engineering data within KNDS UK. You will play a key role in the smooth and efficient flow of production processes within the Manufacturing Engineering team. The BOM Routing Engineer will play a critical role in ensuring the efficiency and accuracy of the production process by maintaining accurate BOMs, optimizing routing structures and validating standard times. You will ensure integrity within key systems by working with Business applications such as SAP and Teamcenter.
Key duties include, but are not limited to:
Development and optimisation of Manufacturing bills of material (MBOM's) for KNDS products SAP
Create and maintain manufacturing routings that outline the step-by-step processes and procedures for product assembly and manufacturing.
Conversion of Engineering Bills of Material into fabrication and assembly Bills of Material on the basis of available technical documentation (for example, data sheets, technical drawings)
Collaborate with production teams to optimize routing processes, minimizing waste and improving efficiency.
Define time standards and resource requirements for each manufacturing step
Leadership in the optimization of material flows.
Cooperation in solving of assembly and manufacturing problems.
Work closely with design and engineering teams to ensure BOMs align with product designs and manufacturing processes.
Provide and assist with Product/Project/Commercial cost estimations.
Work with finance and production teams to develop cost models based on material, labour, and overhead costs associated with the manufacturing processes.
Manage and resolve discrepancies between BOM and routing data.
Maintain the integrity of data in the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure smooth transitions from design to manufacturing.
Ensure version control of BOM and routing data for engineering changes or updates to the product.
Provide technical support for troubleshooting and resolve issues related to BOM or routing discrepancies.
Support audits by providing accurate BOM and routing documentation.
Manage change through BOM and routing changes resulting from design modifications or process improvement involving relevant stakeholders
Participate in process improvement initiatives to streamline BOM creation, routing processes, and overall manufacturing efficiency.
Identify opportunities for cost reduction and process optimization while maintaining high-quality standards.
Generate reports on BOM status, routing performance, and manufacturing efficiency for management review.
What we're looking for...
Our ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the following:
Proven experience (in a manufacturing or engineering role, particularly in BOM creation and routing processes.
Ability to collect, analyse, and interpret data from time and motion studies to identify inefficiencies, bottlenecks, and areas for improvement.
Hands-on experience working within Heavy manufacturing Engineering, assembly, and production environments, particularly in defence or highly regulated industries.
Strong understanding of Bill of Materials (BOM) structure, design, and management.
Experience developing and maintaining manufacturing routings, process flow documentation, and work instructions.
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, CAD files, and technical specifications.
Strong analytical skills to review and optimize manufacturing processes.
Strong written and verbal communication skills for clear documentation, cross-functional collaboration, and reporting.
A good understanding of manufacturing processes. i.e. machining, laser & waterjet cutting, fabricating, assembly, coating processes etc.
