Diamond Light Source is the UK's national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences.
Diamond is one of the most advanced scientific facilities in the world, and its pioneering capabilities and talented staff are helping to keep the UK at the forefront of scientific research.
About the Role
We now have an opportunity for a Beamline Scientist or Senior Beamline Scientist to join Diamond's I21 RIXS team.
I21 is a dedicated Resonant Inelastic soft X-ray Scattering (RIXS) beamline that provides a highly monochromatised, focused and tunable X-ray beam onto materials, while detecting and energy-analysing scattered X-rays using a spatially-resolved two-dimensional detector.
This role has responsibility for collaborating with the Principal Beamline Scientist for the commissioning and operation of the beamline. You will also work closely with other scientists and support groups within Diamond to ensure smooth operation of the beamline, providing beam time to the scientific user community.
In addition, you will participate in the beamline inhouse curriculum and develop your own independent research programme
Further responsibilities will include:
Acting as a single point of contact for a proportion of user experiments providing specialist technical / scientific advice.
Collaborating on beamline upgrades and development projects, including taking specific responsibility for certain components of the beamline such as the design, manufacture, installation, testing and commissioning phases.
Managing the development, procurement, testing, installation, and maintenance of bespoke scientific equipment and software to perform novel experiments on the beamline and the peripheral laboratory.
Advising on the development of data acquisition, visualisation and analysis software and being involved in commissioning of new software.
You will need to be available to travel occasionally within the UK and abroad, including some overnight stays, and work flexibly with occasional weekend and out of hours working during peak times.
Applicants will be considered at either Beamline Scientist or Senior Beamline Scientist level, depending on the strength of your skills, experience and qualifications.
About You
You will have an appropriate first degree, along with a PhD/Second degree in physics or materials science or a related discipline.
You will demonstrate knowledge / experience of:
Synchrotrons.
Beamline instrumentations.
Software packages and programming.
Beamline X-ray optics and X-ray instrumentation, including X-ray detectors.
You should also have developed an independent research programme and have a successful scientific publication record.
You will also have knowledge / experience in at least one of the following areas:
X-ray absorption spectroscopy;
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy;
Resonant inelastic (elastic) X-ray scattering;
Many-body physics in condensed matter systems;
Crystal field and ligand field multiplet theory;
Density functional theory.
For consideration at the senior level, you will have experience in beamline design, construction, commissioning and operation, Project Management, and Programming skills in Python or a similar language.
Benefits
