About the role:

We\xe2\x80\x99re seeking an Audience Editor to join the vibrant Research Editorial team in our Academic Division. This role will help build a center of audience and author expertise within the content strategy and acquisition team, building interest in and engagement with our content, and informing decisions that help us take the content we have already acquired and will acquire in future to as wide an audience as possible. Working closely with colleagues in Product, Sales, Market Research, Marketing, and other areas, this role will improve our understanding of the evolving needs of the academic community \xe2\x80\x93 as both the creators and consumers of content \xe2\x80\x93 and shape the development of our content strategy to respond those needs.

Our acquisitions teams are working on a new digital-only publishing project \xe2\x80\x93 Oxford Intersections \xe2\x80\x93 bringing scholars from across the disciplines to address pressing societal topics. These may be challenges faced by humanity \xe2\x80\x93 environmental, cultural, political, psychological \xe2\x80\x93 where a body of researchers working in the area would benefit from scholarship set up for user journeys within and across chapters. The Audience Editor\xe2\x80\x99s work will initially focus on supporting the development and roll-out of this project, before broadening their work across the research and reference programme at OUP.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced candidate to help shape a new role and to have a significant impact at this early stage of a high-priority and innovative new research publishing venture.

Responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Engage with the academic community to understand their evolving content needs, identify trends in information consumption and disciplinary trends, and ascertain how scholars are using content and tools in their research and teaching.
  • Engage with the same communities to understand what an author needs from their publisher at every stage of their career and the different stages of the research lifecycle. Help develop plans that further OUP\xe2\x80\x99s commitment to being a responsive partner in the development and dissemination of an author\xe2\x80\x99s work.
  • Partner with acquisition editors to feed into the evolution of current and future content plans to support the evolving needs of readers and users, and to develop plans for strategic content enhancement and enrichment to drive discoverability and add value for readers.
  • Partner with acquisition editors on plans to extend the reach of backlist/existing collections, finding new ways to take this content to new readers.
  • Build a compelling author and funder narrative around reach and impact, communicating clearly the value of the OUP offer and supporting author experience.
  • Play a leading role in how customer and author needs are embedded across the editorial and content strategy business.
We operate a hybrid working policy that requires a minimum of 2 days per week in the Oxford office.

Essential
  • Knowledge and/or experience with academic and scholarly publishing.
  • Experience of building, maintaining, and utilizing networks within the publishing industry and relevant academic/professional communities.
  • Experience conducting market research and data analysis.
  • Proven track record in project leadership and management.
  • Ability to work with peers and cross-functionally in a productive manner (including within a matrixed structure) towards a common purpose
  • Excellent written communication as well as strong presentation, interpersonal, and verbal skills
  • Numerate, analytical, and a problem solver, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to deliver projects and reports to tight deadlines, with excellent prioritisation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to new systems and processes
Desirable
  • Knowledge of cross-disciplinary scholarship approaches, and experience with universities, scholarly societies, and/or professional bodies.
  • Experience with digital and open-access publishing.
  • Experience training and/or mentoring others.
