We are seeking experienced, motivated, and ambitious individuals to join Arriva London in full-time permanent Assistant Engineering Manager (AEM) / Workshop Manager roles.
As an Assistant Engineering Manager, you'll play a pivotal role in supporting the Garage Engineering Manager to ensure the efficient operation of our workshops. You'll help maintain the highest standards of service delivery, meeting the targets set by TfL, Arriva London, and the DVSA, while ensuring compliance and supporting the team to meet their Peak Vehicle Requirement (PVR). Your leadership will help us stay within budget, while delivering on our core KPIs.

Required Skills & Experience:

Strong engineering background with proven experience in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of heavy vehicles and equipment. Experience in the Bus/HGV industry is preferred.
Recognized apprenticeship or vocational qualification in mechanical/electrical engineering or a similar field. Degree-level qualifications are also welcome.
In-depth knowledge of health & safety regulations and a commitment to adhering to best practices (IOSH).
Proven ability to lead and inspire a team to work in a safe, effective, and efficient manner.
Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to work under pressure.
Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to problem-solving.
Experience working with Trade Union representatives is a plus.
Key Responsibilities:
Depot Security & Safety:
Ensure depot security and staff adherence to safety practices.
Team Supervision:
Lead and supervise the team to ensure efficient and safe vehicle maintenance.
Workload Planning:
Oversee task distribution and work with Chargehands to meet targets.
Adherence to Procedures:
Ensure the team follows health & safety and quality guidelines.
Resource Management:
Ensure necessary parts and equipment are available.
Documentation & Reporting:
Manage work records and provide reports to the Engineering Manager.
Root Cause Analysis:
Identify improvements in fleet reliability and reduce breakdowns.
Cost & Efficiency:
Help manage costs and improve team performance.
Site Lead:
Step in as the site lead when the Engineering Manager is absent.
Health & Safety:
Ensure all staff comply with health & safety regulations.
Monitor contractor safety and continuously improve safety practices.
Customer:
Ensure vehicle availability and maintain high cleanliness and maintenance standards.
Quality:
Support the Engineering Manager in meeting contractual obligations.
Supervise engineers and identify training needs to ensure quality.
Foster a culture of accountability and ownership.
Continuous Improvement:
Contribute to waste reduction and efficiency improvements.
People Management:
Manage recruitment, performance reviews, training, and development.
Ensure adherence to company policies and union agreements.
