Salary : 51,700 - 61,467 per annum depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.


Location : Belfast


Contract : Fixed Term Contract / Attachment - Part Time 17.5 hrs per week




This role is advertised as part of our BBC Extend programme for disabled people. Job Purpose

BBC News NI is seeking to recruit a part time (0.5 ET) Assistant Editor for 12 months. In the first instance the successful candidate will work on radio current affairs output. This is a key leadership role in the Belfast newsroom. The successful candidate will lead teams producing the Talkback programme and will play a key part in shaping our news output for the future.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

The Assistant Editor will:


Deliver programmes to the highest editorial standards. Challenge and encourage their teams to produce new ideas, fresh treatments and imaginative programmes.

Provide constructive performance feedback to team members.

Fully understand the broadcast and production technologies in use in the Belfast newsroom, in particular for those used for radio. Become part of the wider management team in the newsroom.

Work flexibly across the output as required.

Help drive BBC News NI's Social Media offering and effectively use cross-promotional opportunities on all output.

Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience

The ideal candidate will have:


Substantial radio journalism production experience.


A proven track record of sound news judgement. Ability to deal with complex editorial issues in a pressurised environment.


A proven ability to produce original journalism and treatments.


A thorough understanding the politics and current affairs of Northern Ireland along with a keen interest in current affairs across these islands.


Evidence of the ability to manage and lead teams of staff, providing regular feedback and playing a key role in developing talent.
