This is an exceptional opportunity to join Stockport Council to oversee the largest portfolio of town centre regeneration schemes in the country. This is a critical moment in the council\'s and the Borough\'s future, with delivery across a range of schemes well underway and ambitions high for the next phase of development. The role will span both the SMBC and Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation - the first Development Corporation in the UK to focus on town centre regeneration.. With oversight of the council\'s major regeneration projects, the role will see you deliver our priority regeneration and place making projects.
The transformation of Stockport is setting a new benchmark for town centre living, with a regeneration approach that is akin to the city centre experience, with an emphasis on culture, leisure, amenities, public realm, transport infrastructure, workspace and new homes. The Council has secured investment of \xc2\xa31billion which is enabling delivery of an ambitious programme of schemes including refurbishing historic buildings in the town centre, building new public spaces and facilities, creating a new business district at Stockport Exchange, revitalising Merseyway shopping centre and creating more than 4,000 new homes.
This progress has been widely celebrated with Stockport beginning to be recognised as an emerging hub of creative activity in Greater Manchester. In 2022 Stockport was dubbed the \'new Berlin\' by DJ Luke Unabomber and has also been named one of the \xe2\x80\x9ccoolest corners of the country\xe2\x80\x9d and one of the best places to live 2023 by The Sunday Times. In 2023 we were awarded the title of Greater Manchester\'s Town of Culture 2023.
Stockport MDC is a radical new approach to tackling future housing need and the changing role of town centres. It brings together powers and funding from the Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, strong local leadership from Stockport Council and the long term commitment of Homes England, to scale up delivery of a new urban neighbourhood. Stockport Council\'s \xc2\xa3100m investment facility has given the MDC significant influence in its discussions with developers and landowners to unlock sites and bring forward the types of schemes that fit with the MDC\'s vision and ambition for Town Centre West. The MDC has a clear mission to build Greater Manchester\'s newest, coolest, and greenest urban neighbourhood building upon principles of Community, Sustainability and Innovation. The ambition for the MDC is to deliver 4,000 new high quality homes accommodating around 7,000 residents. Up to 100,000 m2 of employment space will also be provided incorporating a mix of office, workshops, retail and leisure, health and education, which could accommodate up to 5,300 new jobs.
As the Assistant Director of Development & Regeneration, you\'ll play a key role in providing management and leadership for all aspects of place development and regeneration. You will promote and develop strong partnerships with investors, developers and public sector partners to deliver against the Council\'s priorities for regeneration & development, as well as represent Stockport at a city regional level on relevant GM strategic and project boards.
We\'d like to hear from candidates who can think strategically within a politically led corporate context and possess commercial acumen to make decisions that mitigate risk or exploit opportunities. You\'ll have significant and demonstrable previous experience in managing large and complex development and regeneration projects, and you\'ll also have the ability of successfully operating and negotiating with outside agencies for the benefit of the community.
