About us
With locations in London, Berkshire and Warwickshire, the Electricity System Operator (ESO) is a legally separate business within the National Grid Group. As the Electricity System Operator (ESO), we sit at the heart of the energy system. We do not generate or sell electricity, we distribute and balance the supply around the UK to where it\'s needed in homes, hospitals and businesses; second by second, 24-7-365 days a year, keeping the lights on in the UK.
Climate change is the challenge of a generation, here at ESO, we play an instrumental part in transforming the energy system, delivering and operating a greener, cleaner future through evaluating numerous future energy scenarios to enable and meet the UK governments net zero carbon emissions target by 2050, with our sights firmly set on achieving net-zero operability by 2025 and a decarbonised electricity system by 2035.
Becoming the Energy Future System Operator is a critical step to help deliver a reliable and clean energy transition for all. The ESO, including all of its existing roles, will be at the heart of the new Future System Operator, taking on additional roles with a whole energy system mindset to drive progress towards net zero while maintaining energy security and minimising costs for consumers.

As now, it will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements. It is anticipated that the new organisation will be up and running by or in 2024.
The time to act on climate change is now. As part of our team, you won\'t just be touching the lives of almost everyone in Great Britain - you\'ll be shaping the way we use and consume energy for generations to come.
