About the Role

We\xe2\x80\x99re seeking an experienced Acquisitions Editor to join the vibrant Research Editorial team in our Academic Division. Our acquisitions teams are working on a new digital-only publishing project \xe2\x80\x93 Oxford Intersections \xe2\x80\x93 bringing scholars from across the disciplines to address pressing societal topics. These may be challenges faced by humanity - environmental, cultural, political, psychological \xe2\x80\x93 where a body of researchers working in the area would benefit from scholarship set up for user journeys within and across chapters. The publications are aimed at researchers working in interdisciplinary areas, where relevant research content is often scattered among a range of journals and edited volumes. Content in some topics may also be relevant to organizations, policy-makers, and journalists.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong relationships will be key to success as an Acquisitions Editor when working collaboratively with key internal and external stakeholders, such as general editors and scholarly societies.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced candidate to make your own mark on the role and play a pivotal role at an early stage of a high-priority and innovative new research publishing venture.

Responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Identify, evaluate, and pursue publishing opportunities (research topics, general editors, unit editors, authors) that align with agreed strategic goals, diversity and inclusion goals, and the Press\xe2\x80\x99s mission.
  • Propose new content according to academic quality, market appeal, and financial criteria and take projects through internal and external (Delegate) approval.
  • Develop and nurture relationships with external General Editors, Unit Editors, and Advisory Boards from initial recruitment through Unit/content planning and commissioning.
  • Manage commissioning process to meet product launch timelines.
  • Communicate clearly about value of OUP offer (quality, impact, amplification, reach) to editors, authors, and other stakeholders, and support author experience.
  • Contribute to the content strategy for the Press\xe2\x80\x99s online products offerings, with a view to enhancing scope and diversity; collaborate with Content Development to ensure the display and functionality of content meets our publishing standards.
  • Use data reporting, market research, and analysis to identify insights that help define the acquisitions strategy and amplify content and usage.
We operate a hybrid working policy that requires a minimum of 2 days per week in the Oxford office.

About You

Essential
  • Knowledge and/or experience with academic and scholarly publishing
  • Proven track record of managing commissioning process and title delivery/project management
  • Experience conducting market research and data analysis
  • Experience of building, maintaining and utilizing networks within the publishing industry and relevant academic/professional communities
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to new systems and processes
  • Ability to work with peers and cross-functionally in a productive manner (including within the matrix management structure of the Press) towards a common purpose
  • Excellent written communication as well as strong presentation, interpersonal, and verbal skills
Desirable
  • Knowledge of cross-disciplinary scholarship and experience with universities, scholarly societies, and/or professional bodies
  • Experience with open-access publishing and the launch and development of digital products
  • Experience training and/or mentoring others
