The School of Physics, Engineering & Computer Science (SPECS) is seeking to appoint an Academic Support Tutor to work alongside the Academic Skills Tutor in the development of a new School wide SPECS Academic Support Hub (SASH) for our students. The School offers a range of degrees across the three departments, including in Physics, Robotics & AI, Computer Science, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Automotive Engineering and Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Our new SASH has been developed to provide the additional support our students may need to ensure they get the very best out of their time with us. Our SASH will be a first port of call for students with academic queries that extend beyond their taught modules, somewhere for them to speak to a friendly and welcoming team who can provide advice and support.

Main duties & responsibilities

As an Academic Support Tutor, you will work with the Academic Skills Tutor to provide support for students with non-specialist aspects of academic work such as reading academic texts, finding information, writing clearly and structuring work appropriately, constructing arguments, referencing and dissertation support, with a particular focus on supporting our newly arrived postgraduate students, many of whom are international, to ensure maximum impact for these students.

Skills and experience required

You will need proven professional experience of direct support for students through teaching, coaching or mentorship. It is also essential that you have experience in supporting students in a pastoral capacity and that you are able to demonstrate an empathetic and positive approach to support.

You will have experience relevant to support the development of an academic skills programme, designed to meet the changing needs of our student cohorts and address the targets of the SASH on an ongoing basis. You will have experience in developing resources and delivering skills sessions to support academic development of our students and will be comfortable leading these sessions for students with a wide range of abilities and backgrounds.

You will be skilled at working effectively as part of a team, or on your own, including in the development of resources to deliver a programme of support for students.

Qualifications required

You will hold a minimum of an Honours degree or equivalent, and ideally a Postgraduate qualification in an area relevant to the role. Fellowship of Advance HE would be an advantage.

Please view the job description and person specification for a full list of the duties and essential criteria. Please attach a personal statement showing clearly how your skills and experience match the Person Specification.
